Talking about money before marriage
Money is one of the hardest subjects to raise while getting to know someone. It is also one of the most important.
What the research found
A study using long-term data from 4,574 American couples found that disagreements about money were the strongest type of disagreement predicting divorce, for both wives and husbands. The couples' actual financial situation was not linked to divorce once those disagreements were taken into account.
Why that matters
In the same study, how couples argued and how satisfied they were with their marriage explained the link between money disagreements and divorce. In other words, the way a couple talks about money seems to matter more than how much money they have.
Starting the conversation
On Marriage-Ready Society, answers about money are shared only once a request has been accepted, so you can raise the subject in private, with someone you have chosen.
- Start with values: what does money mean to each of you, security, freedom or generosity?
- Share facts calmly: income range, savings and any debts
- Agree how decisions will be made, together or by area
- Talk about family obligations, such as supporting parents
Questions to ask each other
- How did your family talk about money when you were growing up?
- Would you rather save for the future or enjoy more today?
- Do you expect to support your parents or siblings financially?
